EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored engraving on steel, created by Annedouche after a drawing by Edouard Travies, showcases two intriguing avian species: the Crested Drongo (Dicrurus forficatus) and the American Yellow Warbler (Setophaga aureola). The image is taken from Richards New Edition of the Complete Works of Comte de Buffon, published by Pourrat Freres in Paris in 1837. The Crested Drongo, a native of Africa and Asia, is depicted on the left side of the print. This bird is characterized by its long, decurved bill, glossy black plumage, and distinctive white tips on its wing feathers. The most striking feature of the Crested Drongo, however, is the prominent white plume on its head, which gives it its name. This bird is known for its agility and ability to mimic the calls of other birds, making it a formidable predator in its habitat. On the right side of the print, the American Yellow Warbler (Polioptila caerulea) can be seen. This vibrant bird is a native of North and Central America. The male is easily identified by its bright yellow plumage, with a distinctive black mask around its eyes and a yellow belly. The female, while less colorful, has a similar body shape and pattern. The American Yellow Warbler is a migratory bird, traveling between its breeding grounds in North America and its wintering grounds in Central America and the Caribbean. This beautiful handcolored engraving not only showcases the intricate details of these two birds but also provides a glimpse into the rich history of ornithology. The drawing was originally created by Edouard Travies, a skilled naturalist and artist, and was later reproduced in steel engraving by Annedouche. The resulting image is a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and the artistic skill of the time.
