EDITORS COMMENTS
David Baron Chasse: A Distinguished French Military Commander of the Late 18th and Early 19th Centuries This evocative portrait captures the stern yet resolute countenance of David Baron Chasse (1765-1849), a renowned French military commander who served during the tumultuous period of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. Born in Metz, Lorraine, Chasse began his military career in the Royal Army of Louis XVI, rising through the ranks due to his exceptional leadership abilities and tactical acumen. However, Chasse's allegiance to the monarchy put him at odds with the revolutionary forces during the French Revolution. He was arrested and imprisoned several times, but each time managed to escape and resume his military duties. In 1793, Chasse joined the Army of the Moselle under the command of General Charles de Pichegru and distinguished himself during the siege of Longwy. After the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte, Chasse once again found himself in the midst of political turmoil. He was appointed as the commander of the 1st Light Cavalry Regiment in 1800, and later served as the governor of the military prison at Toulon. In 1806, Chasse was made a baron in recognition of his military achievements. Despite his loyalty to the French monarchy and the Bourbon Restoration, Chasse remained a respected military figure during the Napoleonic Wars. He was appointed as the governor of the military prison at Toulon and later served as the commander of the 1st Military Division in the Rhineland. This portrait, taken in the later years of Chasse's life, captures the stoic determination and unwavering resolve of a man who dedicated his life to the service of his country, even in the face of political upheaval and personal adversity.
