EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the historic David Livingstone House in Zanzibar, a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania in East Africa. Built around 1860, the house once served as a residence for Sultan Majid, the Sultan of Zanzibar between 1856 and 1870. Scottish explorer David Livingstone, famously known for his missionary work and exploration in Africa, lived in this very house during his final years, from 1866 until his death in 1873. The photograph, taken in 1907, shows the house in a state of abandonment, with overgrown vegetation surrounding it. The inset portrait of Livingstone adds a poignant touch to the image, reminding us of the rich history that once unfolded within these walls. Livingstone's time in Zanzibar marked the end of his explorations and the beginning of his advocacy for the abolition of the slave trade. His efforts led to the signing of the Zanzibar Convention in 1873, which prohibited the slave trade in Zanzibar and Pemba. Today, the David Livingstone House has been fully restored and is a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can explore the museum and learn about Livingstone's life and achievements, as well as the significant role Zanzibar played in African history.
