1746 1806 Judge Smythe Methven

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the stern yet dignified visage of David, Lord Methven, a prominent Scottish judge and statesman of the late 18th century. Born in 1746, David Smythe would later assume the title of Lord Methven upon inheriting the estate from his uncle. His legal career began in earnest in 1768 when he was appointed a Writer to the Signet, a position that granted him the authority to draft legal documents. By 1775, Lord Methven had risen to become a Lord of Session, one of the highest judicial offices in Scotland. His tenure on the bench was marked by his unwavering commitment to upholding the law and his ability to deliver clear, reasoned judgments. In addition to his judicial duties, Lord Methven also served as a Member of Parliament for Perthshire from 1780 to 1784. This portrait, created in the late 18th century, captures Lord Methven in the prime of his career. He is depicted wearing the traditional robes of a Scottish judge, complete with the ermine-trimmed robe and the broadsword at his side. The solemn expression on his face conveys the gravity of the responsibilities that he bore as a judge and a statesman. Lord Methven's legacy extended beyond his legal and political accomplishments. He was a generous patron of the arts and supported the development of the Scottish Enlightenment, a period of intellectual and cultural flourishing in Scotland. His patronage included the renowned painter Sir Henry Raeburn, whose works can be found in galleries and museums around the world. This portrait offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable figure in Scottish history, a man who dedicated his life to the pursuit of justice and the advancement of his country's cultural and intellectual heritage.
