Where Did That One Go by H. M. Bateman
(With innumerable apologies to Captain Bruce Bairnsfather) An irate golfer on the green struggling to make contact with the ball drawn by H. M. Bateman but very much in the style of Captain Bruce Bairnsfather. The title of the cartoon was originally used for Bairnsfathers first picture published in The Bystander in 1915, showing a group of British soldiers quivering in a dug-out while shells explode around them. EDITORS COMMENTS
: A Humorous Take on Golfing Frustrations by H.M. Bateman, Inspired by Captain Bruce Bairnsfather In this delightful cartoon by H.M. Bateman, we find an exasperated golfer standing on the green, his club raised in mid-swing, as he watches in disbelief as yet another potential hole-in-one disappears from view. The title "Where Did That One Go?" is a nod to Captain Bruce Bairnsfather's iconic 1915 cartoon of the same name, which depicted British soldiers huddled in a dugout during World War I, quivering in fear as shells exploded around them. Bateman's rendition of this classic title adds a touch of whimsy and humor to the world of golf. The golfer's furrowed brow, bulging eyes, and open-mouthed expression convey a sense of determination and frustration, as if to say, "This ball will not elude me!" The lush green landscape and rolling hills in the background add to the serene and picturesque setting, making the golfer's plight all the more comical. Bateman's artistic style, reminiscent of Bairnsfather's, is characterized by its intricate detail and expressive characterization. The lines and shading in the cartoon are precise and deliberate, giving the image a sense of depth and texture. The use of contrasting colors and bold outlines adds to the overall visual appeal and humor. This cartoon is a testament to the enduring appeal of Bateman's work and the timeless nature of golfing frustrations. Whether you're a seasoned golfer or a casual observer, "Where Did That One Go?" is sure to bring a smile to your face and remind you that even in the face of adversity, a sense of humor can go a long way.
