EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate engraving showcases the enigmatic and extinct Dodo, Raphus cucullatus, with its distinctive companion, the Sabre-tailed Finch, Didus ineptus. The image is taken from George Shaw and Frederick Nodder's The Naturalist's Miscellany, published in 1792. The Dodo, native to the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, was a flightless bird that stood about 30 inches tall and weighed around 11 pounds. Its large, round head, with its small, bead-like eyes, and its plump, oval body, make it an intriguing subject. The Sabre-tailed Finch, on the other hand, is depicted with its distinctive long, curved tail feathers and short, rounded wings. The Dodo and Sabre-tailed Finch were both discovered by Dutch sailors in the late 16th century, and their unique appearances quickly captivated Europeans. However, their lack of ability to fly made them easy prey for predators, and they were hunted to extinction within a few decades of their discovery. This beautiful engraving, with its intricate details and vibrant colors, serves as a poignant reminder of these fascinating birds and the important role that natural history illustrations play in documenting and preserving the natural world. The Naturalist's Miscellany, with its high-quality engravings, was an essential resource for naturalists and collectors of the time, and this image of the Dodo and Sabre-tailed Finch remains a cherished piece of natural history today.
