EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning double-sided stele from Harageh, dating back to the Late Middle Kingdom of Egypt around 1800-1650 BC, is a remarkable testament to the rich artistic and religious traditions of ancient Egypt. Carved from limestone, the stele depicts two jackals facing each other, an iconic representation of the gods Anubis and Thoth, who were often depicted in this form. The upper part of the stele is dedicated to the invocation of three major deities: Ptah, Osiris, and Sobek. The invocations are inscribed in beautiful hieroglyphics, with the names of the gods illuminated for added emphasis. The horizontal lines of the hieroglyphs contrast beautifully with the more organic forms of the jackal figures below. The stele bears the full name of its owner, Seneb, who was known as Khenti-kheti-emsaf-seneb. The purpose of the stele was likely to invoke the gods' protection and blessings upon Seneb and his household. The intricately carved details and the careful arrangement of the figures and text demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship and artistic skill of the ancient Egyptian artisans. This double-sided stele is now housed in the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek Museum in Copenhagen, Denmark, where it continues to inspire awe and fascination among visitors from around the world. The stele's preservation is a reminder of the enduring legacy of ancient Egyptian culture and the importance of preserving and celebrating our shared cultural heritage.
