EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing diagram from 1914 illustrates the extensive provisions required to maintain a crew of 900 men aboard a Dreadnought-class battleship for approximately one month during the First World War. The Dreadnought, a symbol of British naval power and the largest warship in the world at the time, was a formidable floating fortress, and keeping her crew well-fed and supplied was a logistical challenge. The diagram, produced by the Scottish firm of Macpherson & Co., details the vast quantities of foodstuffs, fuel, and other essential supplies necessary to sustain the ship's company during prolonged periods at sea. The provisions included over 1,000 tons of coal, 1,200 tons of fresh water, 1,000 tons of salt water, 1,200 tons of fresh meat, 1,500 tons of biscuits, 1,500 tons of potatoes, 1,500 tons of vegetables, 1,500 tons of fruit, and 1,500 tons of other stores. The Dreadnought's galley was a bustling hub of activity, with three large boilers supplying steam to cook the vast quantities of food. The ship's bakeries produced over 1,000 loaves of bread daily, and the butchery processed 1,500 pounds of meat weekly. The crew consumed an average of 12,000 meals per day, with each man receiving three square meals and two cups of tea. The mobilization of the Royal Navy during the First World War placed immense demands on its logistical capabilities, and the provisioning of its battleships was a critical aspect of its war effort. This diagram offers a fascinating glimpse into the sheer scale of the resources required to keep a Dreadnought and her crew at the ready, and the impressive efficiency of the British naval machine during a time of war.
