The Duchess of Kent, Queen Victorias mother

Princess Viktoria of Saxe-Coburg, later H.R.H. Duchess of Kent (1786-1861), mother of Queen Victoria. Formerly Victoria of Saxe-Coburg, she was the widowed sister of Leopold of Saxe-Coburg who had himself been widowed in 1817 when Princess Charlotte, George IVs heir, had died in childbirth. The event led to the infamous race for wives among George IIIs sons and it was Victoria, following her marriage to the Duke of Kent who was the first to produce a female heir to the British throne in 1819. 1829 Coburg Duchess Saxe Viktoria

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning portrait captures Princess Viktoria of Saxe-Coburg, later known as the Duchess of Kent, in the year 1829. Born in 1786, she was the widowed sister of Leopold of Saxe-Coburg, who had himself been widowed in 1817 following the tragic death of Princess Charlotte, heir to the British throne, in childbirth. The event led to a frenzied race among George III's sons for a new bride, and it was Victoria, following her marriage to the Duke of Kent in 1818, who was the first to produce a female heir to the British throne in 1819. The Duchess of Kent's importance in British history is immeasurable, as she paved the way for her daughter, Queen Victoria, to ascend to the throne in 1837. This portrait, taken several years after her marriage, showcases the Duchess's regal bearing and elegant beauty. Her striking features, including her piercing gaze and elegant neckline, are accentuated by the intricate detailing of her dress and the delicate lace collar. The Duchess's Saxe-Coburg heritage is evident in her attire, with the distinctive colors and patterns of the House of Saxe-Coburg prominently displayed. The portrait serves as a reminder of the complex web of European royalty and the significant role that the Duchess of Kent played in shaping the course of British history. This portrait, a testament to the Duchess's beauty and historical significance, is a must-have for any collection of royal or historical portraits. Dated 1829, it is a rare glimpse into the life of a woman who played a pivotal role in the history of the British monarchy.
