1612 1657 Bretagne Duchesse Hercule Marie Rohan

EDITORS COMMENTS
Duchesse Marie de Bretagne, later known as Duchesse de Montbayon, was a prominent figure at the French court during the 17th century. Born into the noble Breton family of de Rohan, she was the daughter of Charles de Rohan, Prince of Soubise, and Catherine de Vivonne. In 1632, Marie married Hercule de Rohan, Duke of Montbayon, with whom she had seven children. This elegant portrait captures the Duchesse de Montbayon in her prime, around the year 1640. She is depicted wearing the latest fashion of the time, with a high-necked, long-sleeved dress adorned with intricate lace and embroidery. Her hair is styled in elaborate curls, framing her face and accentuating her striking features. The Duchess's piercing gaze and confident posture convey a sense of intelligence, grace, and strength. Marie de Bretagne was not only known for her beauty but also for her intelligence and wit. She was a patron of the arts and a generous benefactor to various charitable causes. Her salon at the Palais-Royal in Paris was a gathering place for intellectuals, artists, and writers, including Jean Racine and Molière. Despite her husband's involvement in various political intrigues and conflicts, Marie de Bretagne remained a steadfast and loyal wife. She was a beloved member of the French court until her death in 1657. This portrait is a testament to her beauty, elegance, and the significant role she played in French history as a noblewoman and a patron of the arts.
