EDITORS COMMENTS
Edmund Gwenn, the English actor born in 1877, captivated audiences in the role of Shocked-headed Peter in the famous German children's story "Der Struwwelpeter" or "Shock-headed Peter" in 1913. This photograph captures Gwenn in character, with his wild, tangled hair and long, sharp nails, embodying the mischievous yet cautionary spirit of the story's titular character. Originally introduced to London audiences at the Garrick Theatre on Boxing Day in 1900, the production of "Der Struwwelpeter" was revived for matinees at the Vaudeville Theatre in 1913, providing another opportunity for Gwenn to showcase his talent on the stage. Based on the popular 1845 children's book by Heinrich Hoffmann, "Der Struwwelpeter" was a collection of humorous yet moralistic tales, each with a vivid illustration of a child who met a grisly end due to their disobedience or misbehavior. Gwenn's performance brought these stories to life, leaving audiences both entertained and warned against the dangers of misbehavior. The photograph captures a moment of shock and awe on Gwenn's face, reflecting the impact of his performance on the audience. With his expressive eyes and exaggerated features, Gwenn's portrayal of Shocked-headed Peter remains a memorable and iconic representation of this classic children's story.
