Bishop Blomfield C1880 Colchester Photographic Reverend
EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photographic portrait captures the reverend Edward Harold Browne (1826-1915) during his tenure as Bishop of Winchester from 1873 to 1891. The image, taken around 1876, showcases Browne's distinguished appearance with his bushy beard and serious expression. Browne was a prominent figure in the Anglican Church during the late 19th century, and his appointment as Bishop of Winchester came after a successful career as a clergyman in Colchester, Essex. Born on July 21, 1826, Browne was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, and ordained as a deacon in 1850 and a priest in 1851. He served as a curate in various parishes before becoming the vicar of St. Mary Magdalene, Colchester, in 1861. Browne's dedication to his faith and his community earned him the respect of his peers, and he was eventually appointed as the Bishop of Winchester in 1873. During his time as Bishop of Winchester, Browne oversaw numerous church renovations and expansions, as well as the establishment of new parishes. He was also a prolific writer, publishing several theological works and contributing to various religious journals. Browne's tenure as Bishop of Winchester came to an end in 1891 when he was appointed as the Lord Bishop of Bath and Wells. He continued to serve in this role until his retirement in 1907. This photograph, taken around 1880, provides a glimpse into the life of a dedicated and influential religious leader during a time of significant change in the Anglican Church. The image has been carefully preserved and is now available as a high-resolution print from Mary Evans Prints Online for researchers, historians, and anyone interested in the history of the Anglican Church in England during the late 19th century.
