EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: Edward Irving (1792-1834) - The Scottish Clergyman Who Founded the Catholic Apostolic Church Edward Irving, born in 1792 in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, was a charismatic and influential religious figure whose followers would go on to establish the Catholic Apostolic Church, also known as the Irvingites. Irving's life and teachings marked a significant departure from the established religious norms of his time, earning him both admiration and controversy. Irving was ordained as a minister in the Church of Scotland in 1813 but began to question the doctrines of the established church. His beliefs evolved, and he began to emphasize the importance of spiritual gifts, such as prophecy and tongues, which were considered controversial in the Calvinist tradition. In the late 1820s, Irving's teachings drew a large following, and his congregation in Edinburgh became known as the "Edinburgh Prophets." In 1832, Irving and his followers were excommunicated from the Church of Scotland. Undeterred, they established the Catholic Apostolic Church, which adopted a hierarchical structure and sacraments based on the early Christian church. The new denomination attracted many disillusioned with the established churches and gained a significant following, particularly in England and the United States. Despite the controversy surrounding Irving and his teachings, his legacy continues to influence religious thought and practice. His emphasis on the importance of spiritual gifts and the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer has resonated with many, and his followers have included notable figures such as Phoebe Palmer and Dwight L. Moody. This photograph captures the image of Edward Irving, a man whose unconventional beliefs and charismatic leadership led to the founding of a new religious denomination that continues to shape religious thought and practice today.
