EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait depicts Edward IV, the King of England from 1461 to 1483 (reign period: 1461-1483, born: 1442). Edward was the eldest son of Richard Plantagenet, 3rd Duke of York, and Cecily Neville. His reign is marked by the Wars of the Roses, a series of civil conflicts between the House of Lancaster and the House of York for the English throne. Edward's rise to power began with his victory at the Battle of Towton in 1461, which secured his claim to the throne after the death of King Henry VI. During his reign, Edward brought stability to England, re-established the English monarchy, and promoted the arts and culture. He was also known for his patronage of learning, founding the College of St. George at Windsor Castle and the King's College in Cambridge. Edward's marriage to Elizabeth Woodville, a commoner, caused controversy and led to the resumption of the Wars of the Roses. Edward was eventually defeated and killed at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485, marking the end of the House of York's rule and the beginning of the Tudor dynasty. Despite the controversies of his reign, Edward IV is remembered for his military prowess, his patronage of the arts, and his efforts to bring stability to England during a time of civil unrest. This portrait, likely created during his reign or shortly thereafter, captures the regal presence and strength of a king who left an indelible mark on English history.
