Edward was the eldest son of Richard Plantagenet, 3rd Duke of York, and Cecily Neville. His reign is marked by the Wars of the Roses, a series of civil conflicts between the House of Lancaster and the House of York for the English throne. Edward's rise to power began with his victory at the Battle of Towton in 1461, which secured his claim to the throne after the death of King Henry VI.
