Born in 1572, Edward Cecil was the second son of William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley, and his wife Mildred Cooke. During the early years of the English Civil War, Cecil remained loyal to King Charles I, commanding the royalist forces in the south of England. He played a key role in the defense of London during the Siege of the City in 1642, and was instrumental in the capture of Reading and Basing House in 1643. Despite his military successes, Cecil's fortunes began to wane in the latter stages of the war. He was captured at the Battle of Newbury in 1643 and was later forced to surrender to the parliamentarians in 1645. He was imprisoned until his release in 1647, after which he retired from military life.
