EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures Edward, Prince of Wales, in his military uniform as a second lieutenant of the Grenadier Guards in 1914. The young prince, who would later become King Edward VIII and then the Duke of Windsor, is shown with a serious expression and a crisp, immaculate uniform. The image, dated 7th December 1914, reveals the pride and dedication of the future monarch towards his military service during the early years of World War I. The Grenadier Guards, an elite infantry regiment of the British Army, is one of the oldest in the British military, with a rich history dating back to 1656. The regiment's distinctive red coats, white lace collars, and bearskin hats are prominently displayed in the photograph. Prince Edward's uniform bears the insignia of the Grenadier Guards, including the regimental badge, a grenade, and the royal cypher of King George V. Edward's military career began in earnest in 1910 when he joined the Grenadier Guards as a second lieutenant. He served with distinction during World War I, participating in the Battle of Loos in 1915 and the Battle of the Somme in 1916. However, his reign as King Edward VIII was short-lived, as he abdicated the throne in December 1936 due to his desire to marry Wallis Simpson, an American divorcee. Edward's subsequent title as the Duke of Windsor did not diminish his military legacy, as he continued to serve as the Colonel of the Grenadier Guards until his death in 1972 at the age of 77.
