EDITORS COMMENTS
This stele, dating back to the 13th century B.C., showcases the triumphant victory of Pharaoh Seti I during his military expedition into Canaan. Carved from basalt, this magnificent piece of ancient Egyptian art is now housed in the Rockefeller Archaeological Museum in Jerusalem, Israel. Seti I, depicted on the left side of the stele, is crowned with the Uraeus, the symbol of divine kingship and protection. He is seen presenting offerings of libation and incense to the sun god Re-Harakhty. The intricately decorated relief, belonging to the 19th Dynasty of Egypt's New Kingdom era, is adorned with hieroglyphs that inscribe the details of the pharaoh's military successes. The falcon god, symbolizing the sun, is depicted on the right side of the stele, with a disk above his head. This representation highlights the importance of the sun god in ancient Egyptian culture and religion. The human figure at the bottom of the stele is believed to be Amon-Ra, the king of the gods, who is also shown offering incense to the sun god. This stele is a testament to the rich history and artistic achievements of ancient Egypt. It commemorates the military prowess of Pharaoh Seti I and the deep reverence Egyptians held for their gods. The intricate hieroglyphic inscriptions and the detailed relief work are awe-inspiring reminders of a time long past, inviting us to explore the depths of ancient Egyptian civilization.
