This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from Frederic Cuvier's "Dictionary of Natural Science: Mammals," published in Paris, France, in 1816, showcases two intriguing bat species native to Egypt: the Egyptian slit-faced bat, Nycteris thebaica, and the greater mouse-tailed bat, Rhinopoma microphyllum. The illustration was created by the skilled painter of natural history, Jean Gabriel Pretre, and expertly engraved by Victor, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin.
