EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricately detailed features of Elginia, a rare and fascinating starfish belonging to the family Goniopectinidae, order Asteroidea, and class Echinodermata. Elginia is an invertebrate animal, belonging to the phylum Reptilia, although it is not a reptile itself but rather an echinoderm, a group of animals characterized by their hard, protective outer skin covered in spines or calcareous plates. Elginia is specifically identified as a sauropsid, a subclass of reptiles that includes the Sauropsida, Anapsida, and Diapsida groups. However, Elginia is not a reptile but rather a member of the Pareiasauria, a group of extinct synapsids, a subclass of reptiles that includes the ancestors of modern reptiles and mammals. The print captures Elginia's distinctive star-shaped body, adorned with numerous short, thin arms, each tipped with a small, round, cup-like structure called a pedicel, which is used for attachment to the sea floor. Elginia's body is covered in small, overlapping plates, and its coloration ranges from brown to red, with white spots. Elginia is a member of the Valvatacea, a suborder of the Asteroidea, characterized by their large, flat, disc-shaped bodies and the presence of a central oral disc surrounded by radiating arms. Elginia's arms are covered in tiny, tube-like structures called paxillae, which help the starfish adhere to the sea floor. This studio shot highlights Elginia's unique beauty and intricate anatomy, offering a glimpse into the diverse and captivating world of echinoderms and the wonders of the deep sea.
