"This evocative image captures the historic moment of the Pilgrims' embarkation on their journey from Southampton, England to the New World in September 1620. The Pilgrims, led by their spiritual leader, Reverend John Robinson, were seeking religious freedom and a new life in the unknown lands of America. Among the prominent figures in this print are William Bradford, the future governor of Plymouth Colony, and Myles Standish, the military leader and mariner. Other notable Pilgrims include William Brewster, Edward Winslow, and William Carver. The Pilgrims' voyage was fraught with hardships and challenges, including a treacherous Atlantic crossing during which they encountered storms and rough seas. The Mayflower, the ship that carried them, was small and cramped, and the Pilgrims had to endure harsh conditions, including scurvy and other diseases. Despite these challenges, the Pilgrims persevered and, after a long and difficult journey, arrived in Provincetown Harbor on November 11, 1620. They went on to establish Plymouth Colony, the first successful English settlement in North America.
