EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the intense gaze and unyielding determination of Major General Emory Upton, a pivotal figure in American military history. Born on October 16, 1836, in Rushville, New York, Upton rose to prominence during the Civil War, where he distinguished himself as an innovative military tactician. Upton's strategic mind and commitment to modernizing the Union army led him to write "The Armies of the United States in the War with Spain," a groundbreaking book that advocated for the use of rifled muskets and the adoption of the "open order" formation. These tactics, which emphasized rapid movement and coordinated volleys, would later be instrumental in the Union's victory at the Battle of Gettysburg. Upton's influence extended beyond the battlefield, as he went on to serve as a professor of military science and tactics at the United States Military Academy at West Point. His teachings helped shape the next generation of American military leaders, ensuring that the lessons of the Civil War were not forgotten. Tragically, Upton's career was cut short when he was killed in action during the Battle of Hatcher's Run on February 6, 1865. Despite his untimely death, his legacy as a military innovator and visionary lived on. This powerful image, taken during Upton's tenure as a general, serves as a poignant reminder of the extraordinary impact one man can have on the course of history.
