EDITORS COMMENTS
Emilia Frances Strong, Lady Dilke (1840-1904): A Pioneering Historian and Reformer This portrait captures Emilia Frances Strong, Lady Dilke, in her later years. Born in 1840, Emilia was a woman of remarkable intellect and passion, who left an indelible mark on the world of history and reform. Married first to Mark Pattison, a renowned historian and Regius Professor of Hebrew at the University of Oxford, Emilia's life was filled with academic pursuits from an early age. Her first marriage produced two children, but unfortunately ended in tragedy when Mark passed away in 1884. Just a few years later, in 1888, Emilia married Sir Charles Dilke, a prominent politician, historian, and reformer. Together, they embarked on a new chapter in Emilia's life, one filled with continued intellectual exploration and social activism. Lady Dilke's contributions to the field of French art history are significant. She authored several influential works, including "The Story of French Painting" and "The Life of Jean-Jacques Rousseau," which helped to broaden the understanding of French art and culture in England. Moreover, Lady Dilke was a tireless advocate for social reform. She was a founding member of the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies and worked tirelessly to promote women's rights and education. Her efforts extended to the welfare of children, the abolition of child labor, and the improvement of working conditions for the working class. This photograph, taken likely in the late 19th century, offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman who defied societal norms and left an indelible mark on history. Emilia Frances Strong, Lady Dilke, was a historian, a reformer, and a trailblazer, whose legacy continues to inspire and influence generations.
