Born in County Tyrone, Ireland, McCloskey immigrated to the United States in 1847, seeking religious and educational opportunities. He was ordained a priest in 1853 and later became the Archbishop of New York in 1872. McCloskey's tenure as Archbishop of New York was marked by significant achievements. He played a pivotal role in the consolidation of the Catholic parishes in the city, merging over 100 parishes into 35 larger entities. This reorganization allowed for more efficient use of resources and better service to the growing Catholic population.
