EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Empress Frederick, also known as Princess Victoria, Princess Royal, born on November 21, 1840, as the eldest child and daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. In 1841, she was created Princess Royal of the United Kingdom, a title that held great significance as it was the first time the title was bestowed upon a female member of the British Royal Family. As she grew up, Princess Victoria fell in love with and married Prince Frederick William of Prussia on January 25, 1858. The union between the British and German royal families was a significant diplomatic move, and upon her husband's ascension to the throne in 1888, Victoria became German Empress and Queen of Prussia. Tragically, her husband, Emperor Frederick III, passed away just 99 days into his reign, leaving Victoria a widow at the age of 48. In the aftermath of her husband's death, she was widely known as Empress Frederick or, in German, "Kaiserin Friedrich." This photograph, taken in 1885, captures Empress Frederick in her regal attire, exuding an air of strength and dignity. Her expression conveys a sense of resilience and determination, reflecting the challenges she faced throughout her life as a royal figure in both the British and German courts. Despite the hardships, Victoria continued to serve as a symbol of unity between the two nations, leaving a lasting impact on the history of Europe.
