1501 1559 Erasmus Scholar

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts Erasmus Sarcerius (1501-1559), a renowned German humanist scholar and theologian of the Renaissance period. Born in Rottenburg am Neckar, Württemberg, Erasmus was a prolific writer and editor, best known for his critical editions of the works of the early Church Fathers and for his satirical writings, such as "In Praise of Folly." Erasmus' education began in a Carthusian monastery, where he learned Latin and Greek. However, he left the monastery in 1516 to continue his studies at the University of Tübingen. It was during this time that he came into contact with the works of the ancient Greek and Roman authors, which greatly influenced his thought and writing. In 1517, Erasmus moved to Paris, where he became part of a circle of scholars who were dedicated to the study of the original texts of the early Church Fathers. His groundbreaking work on the text of the New Testament, "Novum Instrumentum omne," which was published in 1516, became the standard text for Protestant and Catholic scholars for centuries. Despite his contributions to scholarship, Erasmus was also known for his satirical writings, such as "In Praise of Folly," which was published in 1509. This work, which was written in the form of a letter from the goddess Folly to Erasmus, was a scathing critique of the excesses and hypocrisy of the Church and the world at large. Erasmus' influence extended beyond the realm of scholarship, as he was also a key figure in the early stages of the Protestant Reformation. He corresponded with Martin Luther and other reformers, and his writings helped to shape the intellectual landscape of the period. This print, which captures the intellectual intensity and wit of Erasmus Sarcerius, is a testament to his enduring legacy as a scholar and a satirist. His works continue to be studied and admired by scholars and readers alike, and his influence on Western thought and culture remains profound.
