EDITORS COMMENTS
Three Dowagers: A Portrait of the 3rd Marquess of Ailesbury and His Two Wives, Ernest Augustus Charles Brudenell-Bruce (1811-1886) This evocative photograph, titled "Three Dowagers," captures a poignant moment in the lives of the 3rd Marquess of Ailesbury, Ernest Augustus Charles Brudenell-Bruce, and his two deceased wives. The image, taken in 1880, portrays a sense of melancholy and introspection as the Marquess is surrounded by the memories of his past. Born in 1811, Brudenell-Bruce was an English nobleman who held the title of Marquess of Ailesbury. He was a man of great wealth and privilege, but his personal life was marked by tragedy and loss. In this photograph, he is seen seated in a drawing room, dressed in formal attire, with the portraits of his two wives hanging on the wall behind him. The first wife, Lady Elizabeth Caroline Somerset, was the daughter of the Duke of Beaufort, and they were married in 1834. She passed away in 1859, leaving the Marquess a widower at the age of 48. His second marriage was to Lady Elizabeth Georgiana Sackville-West, the eldest daughter of the 3rd Duke of Dorset, in 1861. Sadly, she too passed away in 1868, leaving the Marquess once again a widower. The photograph, taken in the late Victorian era, captures the mood of vanity and introspection that was popular during that time. The Marquess's somber expression and the presence of his late wives' portraits suggest a deep sense of loss and reflection. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the transience of life and the enduring impact of love and loss on the human psyche.
