1560s 1568 Escape Leven Loch Oars Rowing Scots Lochleven

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the daring escape of Mary, Queen of Scots from Loch Leven Castle on May 2, 1568. Mary, the tragic and complex monarch of Scotland, had been imprisoned in the castle since July 1567 following her defeat in the Battle of Langside. The castle, situated on a small island in the middle of Loch Leven in Perthshire, Scotland, was a formidable fortress, making her escape all the more remarkable. Mary's rescue was orchestrated by her gaolers, the Earl and Countess of Mar, who were secretly loyal to her cause. In the dead of night, they helped her escape by boat, disguised as a servant woman. In this print, we see Mary, dressed in a hooded cloak, standing at the bow of the boat, ready to embark on her journey. Her loyal servants, including the Earl of Mar, are shown rowing the boat with determined expressions on their faces. The reflection of the moon on the still waters of Loch Leven adds to the serene and mystical atmosphere of the scene. The escape from Loch Leven Castle marked the beginning of a new chapter in Mary's tumultuous life. She would go on to spend the next 14 years in exile, eventually being imprisoned in England and ultimately executed in 1587. This print offers a glimpse into a pivotal moment in Scottish and European history, a moment of intrigue, courage, and survival.
