EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Jean-Francois Pilatre de Rozier, the pioneering French aviator who made history as the first human to take a balloon flight in 1783. Known as "Premier navigateur aerien et pensionnaire du roy" or "First Aerial Navigator and Pensioner of the King," Pilatre de Rozier's groundbreaking achievement marked the beginning of human flight. Born on May 21, 1754, in Paris, Pilatre de Rozier was an enthusiastic experimenter and inventor. He collaborated with the Montgolfier brothers, inventors of the hot air balloon, and together they launched their historic ascent on June 4, 1783, in Château-Thierry, France. The flight, which reached an altitude of approximately 16,000 feet, lasted for about 25 minutes and ended tragically when the balloon landed and burst, killing both Pilatre de Rozier and his passenger, Marquis d'Arlandes. Despite the fatal outcome, Pilatre de Rozier's legacy as a pioneer in aeronautics remains unforgettable. This evocative oval head-and-shoulders portrait, dating between 1783 and 1800, captures the spirit of adventure and determination that defined Pilatre de Rozier's life. The portrait is part of a distinguished collection, a testament to the enduring fascination with the early days of human flight. Tissandier, a renowned aeronautics historian, documented Pilatre de Rozier's life and accomplishments, preserving the memory of this extraordinary figure in the annals of aviation history.
