EDITORS COMMENTS
The Fairy's Dilemma," a delightful theatrical production written by W.S. Gilbert, first graced the stage of the Garrick Theatre on May 3, 1904. In this enchanting comedy, the main characters found themselves in an extraordinary predicament when they were transformed by the Fairy Rosebud into characters of the Harlequinade. Col. Sir Trevor Mauleverer Bart. (played by an unnamed actor), a dashing military gentleman, was transformed into a clown, complete with red nose and oversized shoes. Lady Angela Wealdstone (played by an unnamed actress), posing as Nurse Collins, was magically changed into the beautiful Columbine. The Reverend Aloysius Parfitt (played by an unnamed actor), a pious clergyman, became the mischievous Harlequin, and Mr. Justice Whortle (played by an unnamed actor), a stern judge, was transformed into the comical Pantaloon. This photograph, taken during the production's tour to the Theatre Royal, Portsmouth, on December 19, 1904, presents these transformed characters in their Harlequinade costumes. Sir Trevor Mauleverer, now a clown, dons a colorful outfit and a monocle, while Lady Angela Wealdstone, as Columbine, is dressed in a flowing white gown and a beggar's cap. The Reverend Parfitt, as Harlequin, wears a vibrant Harlequin costume, complete with a mask and bells, and Mr. Justice Whortle, as Pantaloon, is dressed in a large, padded outfit with a bushy mustache and a pompous expression. Presented by Mr. Arthur Bourchier's Company, "The Fairy's Dilemma" was a popular success, delighting audiences with its witty dialogue, enchanting music, and magical transformations. This photograph is a charming reminder of the whimsical world of Gilbert's Harlequinade and the enchanting performances that brought it to life.
