EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning miniature painting, created by the renowned Spanish artist Alonso de Cartagena in 1463, depicts the pivotal moment in the history of the Kingdom of Castile: the surrender of Seville in 1248 to King Ferdinand III, also known as Saint Ferdinand. Ferdinand III, born in 1201, ascended to the throne in 1217, and his reign marked the beginning of the final Reconquista period, during which the Christian kingdoms gradually reclaimed the Iberian Peninsula from Muslim rule. In 1248, after years of relentless campaigning, Seville, one of the most significant strongholds of the Almohad Caliphate, finally surrendered to Ferdinand's forces. This painting is part of the "Genealogia de los Reyes de España" or "Genealogy of the Kings of Spain," a manuscript that chronicles the lineage of the Spanish monarchs from the Visigothic period to the late Middle Ages. The central scene showcases Ferdinand III in his regal attire, receiving the keys of Seville from the hands of the city's Muslim ruler, symbolizing the city's conquest and the expansion of the Christian kingdom. Alonso de Cartagena's masterful use of color, intricate details, and dynamic composition bring the historical event to life, making this painting a testament to the rich artistic and historical heritage of Spain.
