EDITORS COMMENTS
Fire in the Outskirts of Izmir, Turkey - Viewed from the HMS Marlborough, 1923 This evocative image captures the aftermath of a devastating fire that engulfed the outskirts of Izmir, Turkey, in 1923. The photograph was taken from the deck of the HMS Marlborough, an Iron Duke-class battleship of the British Royal Navy. Named in honor of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, the ship was built between 1912 and 1914 and entered service just prior to the First World War. Assigned to the Mediterranean Fleet after the war, the Marlborough took part in the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War in the Black Sea (1919-1920). The ship also saw action in the Greco-Turkish War. In this photograph, the Marlborough looms large on the horizon as the outskirts of Izmir are ablaze. Thick, black smoke rises from the waterfront, obscuring the view of the burning houses and buildings. The Ottoman Empire's once-thriving Greek Quarter lies in ruins, reduced to ashes and rubble. The cause of the fire is unknown, but it is believed to have started in the early hours of the morning on September 13, 1922. The flames quickly spread, fueled by the wooden structures and oil stored in the area. The destruction was extensive, leaving thousands of people homeless and causing significant damage to the city's infrastructure. The fire marked the end of the Greek presence in Izmir and the beginning of the exchange of populations between Greece and Turkey, as part of the Treaty of Lausanne. The event is now remembered as the Great Fire of Smyrna or the Catastrophe of Smyrna. This poignant photograph serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of war and conflict on civilian populations.
