Born on October 14, 1818, in Exeter, Devon, Northcote rose to prominence as a statesman and politician, serving various roles in the government and holding high offices, including the position of Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1859 to 1866. Northcote's political career began in earnest when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Bodmin in 1847. He quickly gained a reputation for his strong commitment to reform and his ability to work across party lines. In 1852, he was appointed as President of the Board of Trade, and later served as the Chancellor of the Exchequer under Prime Minister Lord Derby. During his tenure, he implemented several important economic reforms, including the reduction of taxes, the repeal of the Corn Laws, and the establishment of the National Debt Commission. In 1866, Northcote resigned from the government due to disagreements with Prime Minister Disraeli over the Reform Bill.
