The farmland is completely drowned, a result of numerous high tides that have caused havoc on the countryside. It was hoped that the building of the Coffer Dam would act as a barrier against these assaults of sea water, but as we can see from this image taken on June 7th, 1862, it has not been entirely successful.
The historical significance of this scene cannot be understated - it serves as a reminder of the power and unpredictability of nature. The import of this flooding on both an economic and social level is evident in every inch of waterlogged land captured in this photograph.
