1745 1746 Aids Cave Culloden Defeat Escape Flora Macdonald Pretender Rebellion Romanticised Stuart

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the legendary moment when Flora MacDonald, a brave Scottish woman, aided the escape of the Young Pretender, Charles Edward Stuart, following the disastrous Battle of Culloden in 1746. The defeat of the Jacobite forces marked the end of the 1745 Rebellion, an attempt to restore the Stuart monarchy to the British throne. Charles Edward Stuart, also known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, had been disguised as the servant 'Flora's maid' during his harrowing journey from Inverness to the western Isles of Scotland. Flora, a Gaelic-speaking Highlander, risked her life to help the fugitive prince by transporting him across the Minch Sea to the Isle of Skye. The print depicts the pair making their daring escape, with Flora carrying the injured prince on her back as they navigate their way through a treacherous cave. The flames from the burning heather illuminate the scene, adding an element of danger and romance to the historical event. Despite their successful escape, the pair were eventually discovered, and Flora was arrested and imprisoned for her role in the escape. However, her heroic actions have been romanticized throughout history, and she is remembered as a symbol of Scottish resistance and loyalty. This print offers a captivating glimpse into a pivotal moment in British history, showcasing the bravery and determination of Flora MacDonald and Charles Edward Stuart during their daring escape following the Battle of Culloden.
