EDITORS COMMENTS
Frances Howard, Countess of Somerset (1594-1632): A Portrait of Power and Intrigue This portrait depicts Frances Howard, Countess of Somerset, an English noblewoman whose life was marked by scandal, power, and intrigue. Frances was the eldest daughter of the 14th Earl of Suffolk and Lady Frances De Vere. In 1613, she married Robert Devereux, the 3rd Earl of Essex, a favorite of King James I. Their marriage was short-lived, however, as Frances was rumored to have been involved in the mysterious death of Frances's step-brother, Lord Cobham, in 1616. The allegations of Frances's involvement in the murder led to her divorce from Essex in 1613. Frances's life took another dramatic turn when she married Robert Carr, the 1st Earl of Somerset, in 1613. Carr was a favorite of King James I and was rewarded with the title of earl for his role in Frances's divorce from Essex. The marriage was a source of controversy, as many believed that Carr had manipulated the king into granting him the title for his role in Frances's divorce. Despite the scandal surrounding her, Frances was a powerful figure in her own right. She was known for her beauty, intelligence, and charisma, and was a patron of the arts and literature. This portrait, which captures her in her prime, showcases her striking features and regal bearing. The intricate lace collar and elaborate hairstyle of the time further emphasize her status as a noblewoman of high rank. Frances Howard's life was a testament to the power of the aristocracy in early modern England, and this portrait serves as a reminder of the complex web of relationships and alliances that shaped the lives of the elite during this period. Despite the controversies that surrounded her, Frances remains an intriguing and enigmatic figure in English history.
