EDITORS COMMENTS
Francis Scott Key (September 1, 1779 – January 11, 1843) was an American poet and lawyer, best known for writing the lyrics to the United States national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner." Key was born in Terra Rubra, Maryland, into a prominent colonial family. He received a rigorous education, studying law in Philadelphia and later becoming a successful lawyer in Frederick, Maryland. In 1814, during the War of 1812, Key witnessed the British bombardment of Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor. As the night wore on, Key grew increasingly anxious about the fate of the fort and the American forces within. He had gone out to the British fleet to negotiate for the release of American prisoners, but had been unable to secure their freedom. As dawn broke on September 14, Key was awakened by the sight of the American flag still flying over Fort McHenry. He was elated to see that the fort had withstood the British attack and that the American forces had emerged victorious. Key was inspired to write a poem celebrating the event, which he titled "Defence of Fort M'Henry." The poem was later set to the tune of a popular British song, and became known as "The Star-Spangled Banner." This evocative image of Francis Scott Key captures the intensity and emotion of the moment as he gazes out at Fort McHenry, his quill pen poised above a sheet of paper. The flag flying proudly in the foreground serves as a reminder of the courage and resilience of the American forces during this pivotal moment in the nation's history. The image is a testament to the power of the written word and the enduring legacy of Francis Scott Key's poetic masterpiece.
