EDITORS COMMENTS
Francois Le Vayer, a prominent French historian and scholar, is depicted in this elegant portrait painting. Born in Paris in 1586, Le Vayer was a man of great intellectual curiosity and erudition, who made significant contributions to the fields of history, literature, and philosophy. Le Vayer's historical works focused primarily on the ancient world, particularly Rome and Greece. He was known for his meticulous research and his ability to weave together diverse sources to create compelling narratives. One of his most notable works, "Rome Sauvée," or "Rome Saved," was a defense of the Roman Republic against the criticisms of the Italian historian Tacitus. In this work, Le Vayer argued that the Roman Republic was a model of good governance and that its virtues were worth preserving. Le Vayer was also an accomplished literary figure, and he wrote several works on the art of rhetoric and the importance of eloquence in public life. He was a member of the Académie Française, the prestigious literary institution that was founded in 1635 to promote the French language and literature. Despite his many accomplishments, Le Vayer's life was not without controversy. He was a Catholic, but he was also sympathetic to the Protestant cause and was accused of heresy on several occasions. He was also involved in a bitter feud with the French historian Gabriel Naude, who accused him of plagiarism. Despite these challenges, Le Vayer continued to write and publish, and his works remained influential long after his death in 1672. Today, he is remembered as a brilliant scholar and a tireless defender of the ancient world, whose legacy continues to inspire scholars and students of history and literature.
