Achard's fascination with the natural world began at a young age, leading him to study botany, chemistry, and physics. In 1773, he was appointed as a professor of botany at the University of Halle. In the late 1790s, Achard conducted a series of experiments involving silver nitrate and paper, which led him to discover that exposure to sunlight caused the silver nitrate to darken and form an image. This discovery, although not yet leading to a practical photographic process, was a significant step towards the invention of photography.
