1791 Adopt Assemblee Assembly Bourbon Constituent Constitution Heine Meyer Monarch Monarchy Nationale Oath

EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving by Meyer Heine depicts a pivotal moment in French history during the French Revolution, between 1787 and 1799. The image portrays King Louis XVI of the Bourbon monarchy, taking an oath to uphold the newly adopted Constitution of 1791. The National Assembly, represented by the figures in the foreground, had assembled as the Constituent Assembly to draft a new constitution, aiming to limit the power of the monarchy and establish a more democratic government. Louis XVI, dressed in royal robes, is shown placing his hand on a Bible, symbolizing the sacred nature of his vow to abide by the new laws. The scene takes place in the grand Salle des Séessions (Hall of Sessions) at the Palace of Versailles. The king's reluctance to accept the constitution was a significant factor leading to the escalation of tensions between the monarchy and the people, eventually culminating in the fall of the Bourbon monarchy and the rise of the First French Republic. This engraving, created in 1900, provides a vivid representation of a crucial turning point in European history. The rich colors and intricate details bring the historic event to life, allowing us to witness the complexities of the French Revolution and the profound changes it brought about in the political landscape of the time.
