EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking handcolored illustration from the 1860 publication "Historical Costumes from the 12th to 15th Centuries," we find Emperor Frederick II of the Holy Roman Empire (1194-1250) in the company of his falconer. The imperial court scene is set against a backdrop of lush greenery, with Frederick II, dressed in regal attire, seated on a rocky outcropping. He wears a gold crown adorned with precious stones, a chlamys cloak fastened with a gold clasp, and a tunic with intricate embroidery. In his right hand, he holds a golden scepter, while a belt encircles his waist. Frederick II, known as "Stupor Mundi" or "Wonder of the World," was a polymath and a patron of the arts. He was also an avid falconer, as depicted in this image by the presence of his falconer and the birdwings. The hooded falcon perched on a gauntlet, ready for flight, symbolizes the emperor's mastery over nature and his skill as a hunter. The text accompanying this illustration, written by Camille Bonnard, notes that Frederick II authored a treatise on falconry titled "De arte venandi cum avibus" or "The Art of Hunting with Birds," which was dedicated to his son, Conrad. The treatise is considered a seminal work in the history of falconry and is still studied by falconers today. This image, drawn and lithographed by Paul Mercuri, offers a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the imperial court during the 13th century. The intricate details of the clothing, the falcon, and the setting transport us back in time, allowing us to appreciate the rich history and culture of the Middle Ages.
