Frederick Ripon Robinson

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking portrait, Frederick John Robinson, 1st Earl of Ripon (1782-1859), is depicted in the prime of his life, around the year 1815. Robinson was a prominent figure in British politics during the early 19th century, serving as Member of Parliament for several constituencies and holding various positions in the government. Born on February 22, 1782, in London, Robinson was educated at Harrow School and Trinity College, Cambridge. He entered Parliament in 1806 as the representative for Appleby, a seat he held until 1812. In 1812, he was appointed to the post of Paymaster General in the Duke of Wellington's army during the Peninsular War. After the war, Robinson returned to politics and was appointed to the post of Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster in 1812. He held this position until 1822, during which time he played a key role in the passage of several important pieces of legislation, including the Catholic Emancipation Act and the Reform Act of 1832. In 1827, Robinson was created Earl of Ripon in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, and he continued to serve in various government roles until his retirement from politics in 1852. He is perhaps best known for his role in the repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846, which helped to bring about the end of protectionist agricultural policies and paved the way for free trade. Robinson's political career was marked by his commitment to reform and his ability to work across party lines. He was a strong advocate for the rights of Catholics and other religious minorities, and he played a key role in the passage of several important pieces of social legislation. This portrait captures the intelligence and determination of a man who played a significant role in shaping the political landscape of 19th-century Britain.
