1760 Cultivation Presses Pressing Pressoir Wine

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative 18th century print captures the essence of wine cultivation and production in France during a time when traditional methods were the norm. Dated circa 1760, the image depicts two pressoirs, or wine presses, nestled among lush vineyards. The presses, with their wooden frames and large, sturdy screws, were essential tools in the winemaking process. The grapes, harvested from the surrounding vines, were brought to the pressoirs to be transformed into wine. The grapes were first crushed by foot or with a wooden tool called a couvrechef, releasing their juice. The juice was then collected in large vats, or cuves, for fermentation. Once the fermentation process was complete, the wine was transferred to the pressoirs for the final step in winemaking: pressing. The screws were turned, applying pressure to the solid remains of the grapes, extracting the last of the precious liquid. The resulting wine was then aged in oak barrels, where it would develop its distinctive flavor and character. This print offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the art of winemaking was a labor-intensive, yet deeply rewarding process. The peaceful scene of the French countryside, with its rolling hills and vineyards, serves as a reminder of the rich cultural and historical significance of wine production in France and beyond.
