Abolition Antoinette Assembly Bourbon Deposed Functionary Marie Monarch Monarchy Refuge Revolution Suspension

EDITORS COMMENTS
This colored engraving, titled 'The Royal Family Takes Refuge in the Assembly During the French Revolution (1789-1799),' depicts a pivotal moment in the tumultuous history of France. In the aftermath of the assault on the Tuileries Palace in August 1792, King Louis XVI and his family were forced to seek refuge in the National Assembly. The monarch and his family had been deposed, and the monarchy was under suspension. The image portrays the Bourbon monarchs, King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette, accompanied by their children, as they enter the Assembly. The king, dressed in a simple blue coat and white waistcoat, holds the hand of his youngest son, the future King Louis-Philippe I. Marie Antoinette, wearing a modest white cap and shawl, follows closely behind with her hand on the shoulder of her eldest daughter, Marie-Thérèse. The scene is filled with a sense of uncertainty and apprehension. The king and queen, once the embodiment of power and authority, are now mere figures in a historical transition. The functionaries of the Assembly, depicted in the background, watch the royal family with a mixture of curiosity and trepidation. The age of the monarchy was coming to an end, and a new era was dawning in France. This engraving, taken from the esteemed publication 'The History of France' (1900), offers a contemporary and vivid account of the events that unfolded during the French Revolution. It serves as a poignant reminder of a pivotal moment in history, when the old order was replaced by the new, and the French people took their destiny into their own hands.
