EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative black-and-white photograph captures a group of French shrimpers, or 'palangriers,' from the coastal town of Arcachon in southwest France, in their traditional attire from the early 20th century. The women, dressed in long, full skirts and high-waisted blouses, are seen huddled together on the sandy shore, their faces etched with the hardiness and determination of a life spent working in the marine environment. The shrimping industry has a rich history in Arcachon, with the practice dating back to the 18th century. The shrimpers, or 'shrimp-girls,' would wade out into the shallow waters of the Bay of Arcachon, often up to their waists, to collect shrimp using large, flat woven baskets called 'palangres.' This method, which required great skill and endurance, allowed them to harvest the shrimp while leaving the young ones to grow. The traditional dress of the shrimpers was an essential part of their identity and protected them from the sun, wind, and cold. The long skirts, made of heavy, waterproof fabric, provided coverage and insulation, while the high-waisted blouses, or 'chemises,' were worn with long-sleeved shirts underneath to protect the arms. The women also wore wide-brimmed hats, or 'chapeaux de paille,' to shield their faces from the sun. This photograph offers a glimpse into a bygone era, capturing the spirit and resilience of the French shrimpers of Arcachon and the important role they played in the region's maritime history. The image is a testament to the enduring connection between the people of Arcachon and the sea, and the unique traditions that continue to shape their way of life.
