EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts Gabriel de Rojas Cordova, a prominent Spanish conquistador during the 16th century. Born around 1480, Cordova hailed from the region of Castile and León in Spain. He played a significant role in the conquest of Central America, particularly in the campaigns led by Hernán Cortés against the Aztec Empire in New Spain. Cordova is shown here in full armor, wearing a rounded helmet with a visor that covers his entire face, leaving only his eyes visible. His beard is full and well-groomed, a common feature among Spanish soldiers of the time. He is also seen carrying a large artillery piece, demonstrating his military prowess and expertise in the use of heavy weaponry. This engraving is taken from "La Verdadera Historia de la Conquista de la Nueva España" (The Truthful History of the Conquest of New Spain) by Bernal Díaz del Castillo. The book, published in 1568, is an important historical account of the Spanish conquest of Mexico and the surrounding regions. The engraving is now housed in the Library of the University of Barcelona in Catalonia, Spain. Cordova's military career was marked by several notable achievements. He served as a captain under Cortés and played a key role in the capture of the Aztec city of Cuellar. His military skills and leadership were highly regarded by his comrades, making him a respected figure in the annals of Spanish colonial history. This engraving offers a glimpse into the life of a Spanish conquistador during the modern age, a time marked by exploration, conquest, and the establishment of new territories. Cordova's image, with his determined gaze and imposing armor, serves as a reminder of the courage and tenacity of the explorers and soldiers who shaped the history of the Americas.
