The General Strike - Carrying On 1926

Montage of sketches by ILN Special Artist, Bryan De Grineau showing how volunteers, specials and motorists saved the situation during the General Strike of May 1926. Many volunteers included well-known society people and students (known as the plus-four brigade ). In support of a strike by coal miners over the issue of threatened wage cuts, the Trades Union Congress called a General Strike in early May 1926. The strike only involved certain key industrial sectors (docks, electricity, gas, railways) but, in the face of well-organised government emergency measures and lack of real public support, it collapsed after nine days Date: May 1926

EDITORS COMMENTS
The General Strike of May 1926: Carrying On - A Visual Testament to Volunteer Spirit and Resilience This evocative montage of sketches by ILN Special Artist, Bryan De Grineau, captures the spirit of determination and volunteerism that emerged during the General Strike of May 1926 in Britain. The strike, called by the Trades Union Congress in support of coal miners facing threatened wage cuts, primarily affected key industrial sectors such as docks, electricity, gas, and railways. The image portrays a diverse array of volunteers, including well-known society people and students, who came together to help alleviate the impact of the strike on transportation and travel. Dubbed the 'plus-four brigade,' these volunteers bravely stepped forward to ensure essential services continued, and motorists played a crucial role in keeping the city moving. The General Strike, which lasted for nine days, was met with well-organized government emergency measures and, ultimately, lacked significant public support. However, the images captured in this montage serve as a powerful reminder of the human spirit and resilience that emerged during this pivotal moment in British history. The General Strike of May 1926 remains an important chapter in the annals of labor history, illustrating the potential for collective action and the power of volunteers to make a difference in the face of adversity.
