This striking portrait of Union General Ulysses S. Grant, taken around 1868, captures the intense and focused gaze of a man who led the United States Army to victory during the American Civil War. Grant, born on April 27, 1822, in Point Pleasant, Ohio, rose through the ranks of the military despite a lack of formal education. He served in the Mexican-American War and resigned from the army in 1854 due to financial difficulties. However, when the Civil War broke out in 1861, Grant was reinstated as a colonel and quickly distinguished himself as a brilliant military strategist. Grant's most notable victories came during the Vicksburg Campaign in 1863 and the Siege of Petersburg in 1864. He was appointed General-in-Chief of the Union Army in March 1864 and, in April 1865, he accepted the surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox Court House, effectively ending the Civil War. After the war, Grant served as the 18th President of the United States from 1869 to 1877. During his presidency, he worked to rebuild the country and restore the Union. Grant passed away on July 23, 1885, at the age of 63. This portrait, taken towards the end of Grant's military career, showcases the strong and determined leader who played a pivotal role in shaping the history of the United States.
