Chief Genl Scott Winfield

EDITORS COMMENTS
Gen. Winfield Scott, Commander-in-Chief of the United States Army (circa 1847) This striking portrait captures Gen. Winfield Scott, a prominent military figure in American history, during his tenure as Commander-in-Chief of the United States Army. Born on June 13, 1786, in Petersburg, Virginia, Scott rose through the ranks of the military, earning a reputation as a skilled tactician and a dedicated servant of his country. Scott's military career began in 1808 when he joined the United States Army as a second lieutenant in the 4th Artillery. He saw action in the War of 1812, where he distinguished himself in the Battle of Bladensburg and the Battle of Baltimore. Scott's leadership and bravery during these engagements earned him the nickname "Old Fuss and Feathers" for his meticulous attention to military protocol and appearance. After the War of 1812, Scott served in various military posts and played a key role in the Seminole Wars in Florida. In 1841, he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the United States Army, a position he held until 1861. During his time as commander, Scott oversaw the expansion of the army and the implementation of new military technologies. This portrait, taken circa 1847, captures Gen. Winfield Scott in his prime, with a stern expression and impeccable military attire. The image serves as a testament to his dedication and commitment to the United States military, making it an essential addition to any collection of American military history.
