Georg Kastrioti Skanderbeg: The Lion of Albania (1405-1468) This evocative image captures the indomitable spirit of Georg Kastrioti Skanderbeg, the Albanian national hero who led his people in a valiant resistance against the invading Ottoman Turks during the late Middle Ages. Born in 1405 in Lezhë, Albania, Skanderbeg rose to prominence as a military leader and political figure, becoming the de facto ruler of Albania in 1443. Skanderbeg's resistance against the Ottoman Turks began in earnest in 1443, when he successfully defended the city of Krujë against an Ottoman siege. Over the next two decades, he waged a series of successful campaigns against the Ottoman forces, earning the moniker "Lion of Albania" for his bravery and tenacity. Despite facing overwhelming odds, Skanderbeg's forces managed to hold out against the Ottoman advance, thanks in part to his strategic military prowess and the support of European powers, who saw Albania as a bulwark against Ottoman expansion. Skanderbeg's resistance also helped to preserve Albanian culture and identity during a time of great upheaval. Tragically, Skanderbeg's reign came to an end in 1468, when he succumbed to illness. However, his legacy lived on, inspiring generations of Albanians to continue the fight for their independence. Today, Skanderbeg remains a symbol of Albanian pride and resilience, and his image can be found throughout Albania, from public monuments to private homes. This photograph captures the essence of Skanderbeg's indomitable spirit, showcasing him as a powerful and determined leader, clad in armor and brandishing a sword. The rugged terrain of the Albanian landscape in the background serves as a reminder of the challenging conditions under which Skanderbeg and his people fought for their freedom.
