1851 Belgian Gerard Governor Le Man Liege Mathieu Stamp

EDITORS COMMENTS
"This striking photograph captures the stern yet resolute gaze of General Gerard Mathieu Leman (1851-1920), a prominent Belgian military figure and the last Governor of Liege before the city's occupation by German forces during World War I. Born in Brussels on March 1, 1851, Leman rose through the ranks of the Belgian Army, serving in various capacities both at home and abroad. He distinguished himself during the Congo Expedition of 1892 and later became the military attaché in Berlin, where he gained valuable insights into German military tactics and strategy. When war broke out in 1914, Leman was appointed as the Governor of Liege, a strategically important city located near the German border. He was tasked with defending the city against the invading German forces, and he held out for six long weeks before surrendering on August 16, 1914. Leman's tenacity and bravery during the siege of Liege earned him the admiration of his countrymen and solidified his place in Belgian military history. After the war, Leman continued to serve in various military and political capacities, including as the Inspector General of the Belgian Army and as a member of the Senate. He retired from public life in 1919 and passed away on February 2, 1920. This photograph, taken in the final years of his life, captures the essence of a man who dedicated his life to the service of his country and left an indelible mark on its history." This photograph is a powerful reminder of the courage and resilience of General Gerard Mathieu Leman and the pivotal role he played in Belgian military history. It is a valuable historical document that captures the essence of a bygone era and offers insights into the life and times of a remarkable man.
